Rain on Michigan Ave. Chicago!
My wife really wanted to go shopping on Michigan Ave, and well, I'm not one to say no.... So we shopped and also got caught in the rain!... I'm standing under the canopy at Walgreen's waiting for the storm to pass with Mike Ditka! I didn't bother him as he was on his way home from the Apple store. He's taller that I had imagined.

08-07-2013Leaning Barn
I was at my Cousin's house/farm today and found this old barn that is ready to fall over! I guess a few months ago or it might be years ago it just slumped over. And is now ready to be demoed. I had fun trying to capture the slumping barn today!

At Millennium Park
My kids loved seeing the mirror bean or whatever it's called, but didn't want their picture taken. So I found a way to take it anyways...

I obviously wasn't there to see where the Hotshot crews set the fire line or backfires just south of Rainbow but if I had to guess it would be about 75' from where I'm standing.. I'm standing on a dirt road behind the neighborhood and it looks like the fire break is in about the middle of this picture. There are spots of burned out brush and trees that have some damage below around where I'm standing, and there is a house just behind me. So the Hotshots clearly knew what they were doing!

After a 13 day evacuation period we were finally able to go back to our cabin in the mountains, residents were able to return 2 days ago and the area opened up to the public today. The fire got to within 50' of a few homes and there were still hotshot crews patrolling the lines today as there are still hot spots up in the higher elevations. Were hoping for some monsoonal moisture to bring rain in the next few days that to put them out but not cause flooding.

07-19-2013No Smoke! On day 11 of the Carpenter Canyon Fire, there is no smoke or fire visible from this location. There was heavy rain with some flash flooding in the burn zone today and we won't know tomorrow how much of the fire got drenched until tomorrow. There is hope that starting Sunday they'll allow residents to start returning to their homes...
Day 193 of 365
07-12-2013Life goes on... We are grateful that with today's rain and clouds they've been able to move the containment lines to 43% around the Carpenter Canyon fire. If tomorrows forecast holds we should get more rain tomorrow. With that news we are grateful and hope things are under control in the next few days. Full containment won't occur until it burns out in some areas as it's not possible to get crews to edges of the fire. So on tonights trip to see the smoke I wanted to see if I could get a break in the clouds as dusk, but I found Elvis instead! Viva Las Vegas!

I've also updated some photos in the Mt. Charleston Fire Gallery: http://www.sandquistphotography.com/gallery/30378561_9SmhnH#!i=2617476630&k=7Z3ccncTough day for fighting Wild Forest Fires today.... Temps over 100 with 30mph sustained SW winds blew the wildfire from the forest to the chaparral onto BLM land. While the fire did spread and did find it's first structure, not a house but a garage type building on a ranch. The containment lines around the neighborhoods in Kyle Canyon have held so far and there is hope that as the weather changes they can start to form some containment in the next few days. At dusk today the smoke plume didn't appear as black as it has the past few days. Time will only tell and hopefully some rain will develop in the next two days to help the fire crews out.
Day 190 of 365
07-09-2013Tried a CS6 Pano today. The Carpenter1 fire on Mt. Charleston is only 15% contained with hopes of containment sometime next week. There is a lot fuel up there to burn. The fire did get to within about 1/4 mile of our cabin, but the crews were able to set a back fire that worked in efforts to build a containment line on the south edge of the community. Fortunately there are have been no structures lost or firemen injured.... Hopefully that will continue to be the case until it's all the way out.
Day 189 of 365
07-08-2013The Carpenter1 Fire up in the local mountains is still at zero containment but has turned a bit away from our cabin, now hoping the winds behave and allow the crews to knock it down... So I decided to take a bit of a departure with todays photo. My daughter turns 5 tomorrow and we are getting ready for her party... I liked these pinwheels...

07-06-2013This is the Mt. Charleston Fire... It is estimated to be cover 7000 to 9000 acres of forest covering the Spring Mountains in Southern Nevada. These hills are covered in pines, even very old Bristlecones at the highest elevations. It is very dry and still at Zero Containment. Still lots of black smoke and hope that the wind calms down over night and tomorrow... added a new gallery here: http://www.sandquistphotography.com/Other/MtCharleston-Fire-2013/30378561_9SmhnH#!i=2617476538&k=hxtF8dL

07-05-2013Had a fun albeit tempered July 4 celebration at my parents house...As my parents had to evacuate their mountain cabin(it's a second residence) due to the Mt. Charleston Fire, just north and west of Las Vegas. Hope the winds are as high and they are predicting and that the fire stays away, but with nature you never know...
